Little Pim has fun with languages

September 17, 2009, posted by Ana Lilian

I just had another of those reality check moments that happen way too often once you become a mom.  I honestly thought my daughter would be bored by watching the Little Pim Spanish Eating and Drinking DVD we were sent because, well, she already understands Spanish since it´s the only language she hears at home.  If you visit our sister site, SpanglishBaby, you already know we´re raising her bilingually with what´s known as the minority language at home method.

I have to admit I was totally wrong.  She now constantly requests to watch “El Panda”, which would be the adorable Panda that takes you on a language journey in all Little Pim DVDs (in seven languages so far and seven more in the works).  My girl´s amused by the constant repetition of simple words and phrases that she already knows since they’re part of her everyday.  The excellently produced video rapidly engaged her into repeating the phrases out loud.  It also helps that the video features little kids in activities that are easily recognizable for children.

The 35- minute DVD is made up of seven five-minute series allowing you the flexibility of viewing with your baby or toddler just as much as you like.  Of course, mine sat through the whole thing and started asking for más as soon as the credits rolled.

This is an excellent video series for parents wanting their kids to learn basic vocabulary in any of the seven languages it´s available in.  I personally recommend the Spanish set for parents raising bilinguals using the one-parent/one-child method as one more tool to reinforce the language.  For parents, like Roxana and myself, that speak only Spanish at home and might be concerned that our kids aren´t getting enough exposure to English, it could be a good idea to watch the English/ESL video as well.

Oh, and this just in-last week Little Pim released their very first music CDs in French and Spanish.  The Little Pim Spanish Bop has 15 cheerful songs that highlight vocabulary taught on the DVDs. They just released it and we already have one for you to win!

If you become a Little Pim Fan on Facebook you’ll be the first to know about more special Little Pim contests and promotions just for bilingual families.

  1. This is a very well done series of DVDs. I know some of the people involved in making them and my daughter Chloe went in and was filmed playing a drum for the series. We actually got the DVD in Chinese because I thought Chloe would be bored with a Spanish language one since she was already speaking Spanish (like you Ana, it was probably a mistaken assumption). She really enjoyed watching the video and pronouncing some words in Chinese and we were all surprised when we saw Chloe up on the screen playing her drum. Chloe demanded that we watch those 5 seconds many, many times but she really enjoyed the whole DVD.

I found out that experts agree it is much easier to learn a new language before the age of seven.

I like how they have supplements, like word of the day worksheets to go with the video, teaching tips for parents, extra resources for other books and materials, and the online coloring book that says the item, color, etc in the language that you choose. Awesome!! I am putting this on my son’s Christmas list. Much better than toys….that clutter the house, why not a language that lasts a lifetime!! Great giveaway!

  20. Marcela says:

I just read about the budget cuts and how the learning of second languages are being cut. With no help from school it really is completely up to us to make sure they learn!

I learned via the Little Pim talking coloring book that the Hebrew word for “red” is “adom”.

This looks like a great series.

Well, I am interested to learn more about the Little Pim products despite the accolades they may have received from debauched celebrities. I suppose it is encouraging to know that even intellectually vapid stars of the likes of Brangelina see the value of a multilingual education, but it is definitely not a selling point for me. Sorry, I’m not in a good mood.

  24. Christine says:

I knew that black and white was more eye catching than other colors for small babies. I think its smart to have the teacher of the program be a panda bear. All my children have had a fascination with panda bears. Smart idea.
