Spanish Language Usborne Books

by Roxana S. on July 2, 2009

in Giveaways

This giveaway is now closed. The winner is Debbie R.
Even before Vanessa was born, I was hooked on Usborne books. I think it was my mom who brought me our first copies from México and I immediately took to them.

The books are colorful and beautifully illustrated. And, even though they are not originally written in Spanish, the translations are well done. Another reason I like them is because they’re super sturdy and many of them are the perfect size for little hands. Vanessa has had no trouble holding them and turning the pages for a couple of years now.

One of the series we love is the “Este no es mi…” (That’s not my…) which include books with subjects ranging from animals to toys. Vanessa owns several including “Este no es mi gatito,” “Esta no es mi muñeca,” and “Este no es mi tren.”

These are super simple books which go something like this:

Éste no es mi gatito…

tiene las patas muy ásperas.

And, so on. Until they get to the last page which finally says:

“¡Éste sí es mi gatito!

Tiene la piel muy suave.”

My daughter has basically memorized all of these books and now she reads them to her stuffed animals and dolls. She’s learned a bunch of new nouns and adjectives to describe these, so I’m a happy mami!

The other awesome thing about this series in particular is that they are what Usborne calls “touchy-feely” books meaning that there’s some kind of  texture incorporated into each page. So, in the example above, the kitty’s paws are actually made out of some rough material so that tiny fingers can get an idea of what “áspero” feels like.

For some unknown reason, lately Vanessa has been totally into dinosaurs, so we’re always on the lookout for books about these prehistoric animals. One of her favorite ones, also by Usborne, is simply titled: “El dinosaurio” and it follows the story of a one of these long-extinct creatures from the moment he is born. Again, the illustrations are vivid and just plain pretty.

Usborne has all kinds of other books, DVDs and flashcards as well as a ton of activity books – many of which come with stickers – which we absolutely love! And, in case you’re interested, they also have books in French and German…

Ok, enough bragging! Now for the best news? We’re giving away a packet of FOUR books – three from Usborne and one from Kane/Miller, the other publishing company under Usborne. So go ahead and enter to win copies of the following: “Éste no es mi osito,” “El dinosaurio,” “La Cama Grande de Sofía” and “La Granja.” There’s something everyone in your family will love!

To enter to WIN:

All you have to do for your chance to win is head over to Aprende con Usborne and then come back here and tell us which of the Spanish titles you’d be interested in buying and why. Please be as specific as possible so we now you visited the site. While you’re there, take a moment to register for a chance to win $50 in free books. I went over to Usborne and picked out three of the books to try, El tiempo pasa, Éste no es mi Monstro, and Ositolandia. But I want to recommend one of their books I have been working with. I have five of my grandchildren that are working on learning all the words in the First 1000 Words in Spanish. I have promised them a big reward and they call me up and pass of the different pages. Sometimes I substitute or add words that I more commonly use for ones in the book.

I would purchase 1001 cosas que buscar en el mar y en el mundo de adas. I find that book with greater vocabulary help me in remembering what objects and things are called. Being the only parent to speak Spanish in my home, these kinds of books are a great resource. All the animal books as well. We’re an animal loving family, and recently going to the aquarium and zoo, I got frustrated when I couldn’t remember the names of certain animals in Spanish. My son an I could explore all the new words together.

I love Este No Es Mi Tractor! Dessa is obsessed with tractors. She points them out from her car seat all the time. I love how simply illustrated these books are, too, it makes a big difference in how she responds to a book.

My favorite would be “Éste no es mi camión,” because my boys are obsessed with anything that has wheels.

Also, I can’t recommend “La cama grande de Sofía” enough–that book made transitioning to big-boy beds a piece of cake!

After visiting the aprende con usborne site, I’ve picked several books! I just love the “este no es mi…” series and would start with Este no es mi conejito since bunnies are a central theme in my 20 day old son’s nursery. I think I would get the whole next row too…dinosaurio, dragón, monstruo, y osito! So cute!

After visiting Usborne books these are the books I choose:
1. 123 (Spanish Title)
Series: Luxury Look and Say Board Books (Spanish)
Author: Jo Litchfield
I like this book because of the farm animals and counting which is exactly the books that my daughter is most into right now.

2.¿Jugamos el Escondite?
(Animal Hide-and-Seek)
Series: Spanish
Author: Jenny Tyler
I like this book again for the animals that Sienna loves. I also love the interactive flap books.

3. Cuentos populares del mundo
(Stories From Around the World)
Series: Spanish
Author: H. Amery
My little girl is too young for this book, but I love the idea of the worldy stories that she will enjoy soon.!

34 Dariela July 2, 2009 at 2:14 pm

Lexi already has some of the Usborne books in Spanish and English and just loves El Cerdito Chancho and La Oveja Rizos! I would choose Jugamos el Escondite because it looks cute, Las Hadas (I’ve seen the English one at the library and is really cute), and more from the No es mi… series because they are good at teaching new vocabulary words (even to me!).

Now wouldn’t it be wonderful to win this?! One of Ri’s first books was an Usborne bilingual mini-board book. I always carry it in the diaper bag. Now little A is the one that gets to play with it and read to. Now that Ri is older I know he would love one of their many Dinosaurios books. He loves his dinosaurios!
