Last week, the winners of the 11th Annual International Latino Book Awards were announced during BookExpo America in New York City. In case you missed it, we’d like to share the winners in the children´s books categories with you so you can expand your home library.

The awards – first presented in 1999 – were created by Latino Literacy Now, “in recognition of the many positive contributions being made to Latino literature by publishers and writers worldwide.” The non-profit organization, founded by actor and activist Edward James Olmos in 1997, supports and promotes literary excellence within the Latino community.

There are winners in separate categories for books in English, Spanish and those that are bilingual. I’m familiar with some of the authors, including Pat Mora, but most are new names to me and I can’t wait to check them out.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Thank you very much for posting this list. I am the author of one of the books mentioned (El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo), and I look forward to learning more about the rest of the books, especially in the children’s categories.

I am also delighted to learn that the awards have arisen from the work of Edward James Olmos.

  4. [...] 1) Children’s Book Press – “Founded in 1975, CBP is the only nonprofit independent publisher solely dedicated to first voice multicultural and bilingual children’s literature, by and about people from the Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, African American, and Native American communities. Our books embody our commitment to diversity, literacy, and community.” I love what they’re all about. I reviewed one of their books here. That same book was recently chosen as an Honorable Mention at the 2009 International Latino Book Awards, as I wrote about here. [...]
